Profiles of Joy Fall 2017: Not Waiting for Heaven to Make a Difference

“It’s our mission at InFaith to serve and be the best stewards of donor gifts—the stories of InFaith donors inspire us to live out our mission and help each donor to live out their faith.”

Not Waiting for Heaven to Make a Difference

If a picture’s worth a thousand words, Paul Kulha could fill a library. At his home, photo albums overflow with images of the life he shared with his wife, Marilyn. There are flowers she tended and dogs posing for the camera. Snapshots of the two of them as clowns in the Thanksgiving parade and quilts she made with her church group.

Paul says, “A good picture tells a story. It’s a study in all that God provides.” He trained as a photographer while serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. It’s a skill he has used ever since.

Years ago, Paul and Marilyn discovered the joy that comes with sharing their time and money. They decided to share their blessings to make a difference. This commitment brought them to InFaith Community Foundation where they created a donor advised fund to provide scholarships for veterinary students upon both of their deaths.

Making a Difference Now in Wife’s Memory

Though Marilyn passed away in 2015, Paul still reflects on her loving influence in his life and decided to honor her by making an additional gift. “I realized I don’t want to wait until I’m in heaven to make a significant difference,” he says. “It feels good to honor Marilyn now by supporting the causes she cared about most.”

Paul is using required minimum distributions (RMDs) from his individual retirement account (IRA) to create a second charitable fund. This fund supports organizations that make a difference in the lives of children and animals, which Marilyn loved. “Marilyn shared and taught me love and the joy that comes from giving,” Paul shares. “It is in her memory that I continue to give some of the gifts that God has given me.”

Ways to Give through InFaith

For more than 20 years, InFaith has helped donors create donor advised funds supporting charities and causes that mean the most to them. Some donors create a charitable legacy occurring upon death, others choose to make a difference while living. Some donors choose to do both – give now, while living, and later, upon death.

At InFaith, it’s easy to activate your charitable fund now and consider legacy gifts after your death. Consider starting a donor advised fund that benefits charities and causes of your choosing.
